This is the first of a new series of blog posts I’m writing about my favorite fonts. Some people have shoe addictions, but I happen to have a font addiction. Seriously, there are so many great fonts out there, I really have to be careful not to overspend on them! Fortunately, there are also many great free fonts and you don’t always have to pay a lot of money to expand your collection. Many of the fonts highlighted in this series of posts will be free fonts, but not all of them. So, before you use any of them in your own projects, always make sure that your intended use is allowed by the font’s license.
The font I want to write about in today’s post is the Amatic font by Vernon Adams. If you own an app on your smart phone or tablet that can be used for adding text to images, chances are you have already come across this font. It’s an all-caps hand drawn font that comes in both a regular and bold version. What I really like about Amatic, is that it has an organic, hand drawn look, but is still very easy to read. I feel it’s most suitable if you want text to look a bit playful, but want to make sure legibility isn’t compromised. And the best part about this font: both versions (regular and bold) are licensed under the SIL Open Font 1.1 license, which means they are free for both personal and commercial use!
I found Amatic on Font Squirrel, which is a great website for finding fonts that are free for commercial use.
